Final Destination

I finally made it to Darwin, my last place in Australia.
And this will probably be my last post on this blog from here, I'm flying back to good old Germany on the 23th of August.
Since last time Martin and I went up all the way along the Kimberlies (where we sadly couldn't have a closer look due to 4WD roads only...)to the Northern Territory.
Katherine Gorge was our first stop and a really beautiful one!!! We again hired a kajak and went along the Kathrine River for one day! The scenery was really nice and we had a breath-taking view of the gorge!!
After that we went on through the Kakadu NP, which was a bit disappointing (long distances for more or less nothing and a lot of roads only for 4WD) and after that we got stucked in the Litchfield NP.
Heaps of beautiful waterfalls and you can swim everywhere, which isn't possible everywhere up here. There are quite a few places where you can easily end up as a snack for crocodiles...
The little pixel on the second picture is me standing underneath the waterfall in the Katherine Gorge and the 6th pic is showing Martin sitting in the 'spa' at the Wangi Falls in Litchfield NP!! =)
The 4th one is showing one of these huge termit mounts, which are spread all over NT and northern WA! It's amaying what these little animals are able to build in (in this case) 50 years!!
The other thing which is unique for the region around the Kimberlies are 'boabs'. There is only one type here in Australie, one in Africa and six types in Madagasca. I thing in Germany we use the african name for it, Baobab. They are getting very old and big and somehow they remind me of the "Treebeard" and his friends in Lord Of The Rings...
I'm in Darwin now, doing things like tax-back stuff, spending money, ... and preparing for being in Germany soon.
I'm looking forward to see many of you again in a couple of weeks!!

Karijini & Broome

Hi everybody!
Finally I managed to get out of Exmouth and now I'm on my way (together with Martin and his 'tank') up to Darwin, the last destination of my trip through Australia.
First we went to the Karijini NP and it was one of the most beautiful ones I've seen so far. We climbed through all the gorges and the views were amazing!! The rock formations were just stunning and we had great days in there. Bur after leaving the NP we had to clean the whole car, everything was red and dusty!!!
Port Hedland was very disappointing so we left immediately to Broome. It's a nice town and we did a little bit of shopping (after we lacked any shops in Exmouth for almost 4 month you really get excited when you do your first step into Woolies again =)...), watched saltwater crocodiles during feeding and went for a kajak trip along the coastline.
We are going further norht today, relaxing on a restarea and recuperating from so much civilisation in Broome.

Hi everyone!!
Back again with a few more pictures. This time I managed to get a bit more coloured ones, therefor again a lionfish especially for MaPa!!
I took most of these pictures at the "Navy Pier" here in Exmouth, one of the 10 best divespots in the world!!!
It's not that much coral around there but heaps of fish!! Reefsharks, lionfish, Potatocods, muray eels, shrimps, octopus, heaps of schools of fish, Wobbegongsharks, Nudibranches, ... It was amazing!!
Beside that, my housemate has got a boat and we are going out quite often to go freediving at the Murion Islands and the westreef. At one of these trips, I got the picture of the "spotted Eagle-ray", third picture.

Hi everybody!
Some more pictures from under water and the Cape Range NP. The pictures from this beautiful gorge are already a few weeks old, I've been there together with Micha und Katja. It's called 'Yardie Creek' and it's a nice little spot in the Cape Range NP, right near the Ningaloo Marine NP. It's the only wet gorge around here and heaps of mangroves are growing at the riverside. We had a nice little walk along the gorge, even though it was still pretty hot at that time up here.
But now it's getting cooler up here, the winter is coming and during the day it's only around ~23 degrees at the moment, which is really cold if you are used to temperatures beyond 30 degrees...=)
The other two pictures are showing a nice boxfish and a lionfish, I'm still working on my breathtaking picture of a manta ray... .
I've pretty much finished my divemaster now, so I'll look for a job as one now. Perhaps I can stay with the divecenter I've done my DM with, but I'm afraid they have enough staff at the moment. We'll see.

Some nice pictures I took in the last two weeks. There are heaps of turtles around and it's so funny to watch them feeding. We followed that turtle on the picture for about 20min and I managed to get it on the picture while breathing on the surface!
The other 3 pictures show nudibranches, very small animals (~3 cm long) which are quite seldom and they are like snails, I actually think in german they are called "Seeschnecke", but I'm not quite sure. They appear in all colours and some of them are even poisionous, but very beautiful.
I'm still waiting for my sensational manta-ray picture ... but I've still some time to grap a good one =).
I hopefully finish my Divemaster program in 2-3 weeks and start working on a boat afterwards. I post some more pictures soon, from underwater and from 'Yardie Creek' as well which is a nice gorge in the Cape Range NP near Exmouth.

Hi everybody!
After jumping on a plane twice and travelling about 5000km to the northwest of Australia I arrived in Exmouth on Good Friday where Katja and Micha picked me up from the airport.
We spent the easter-weekend snorkeling and swimming in the Indian Ocean and it's absolutely great up here! The Ninaloo Reef is a big coral reef reaching from Exmouth all along the west coast pass Coral Bay.
There are heaps of reef fish like angelfishes, butterflyfishes, parrotfishes, reef sharks (white tip, black tip, wobbegong, some nurse sharks, ...), anemonefishes, nudibranches, turtles .... You don't have to go diving to see all these animals, the reef reaches quite near to the shore so it's easy to go for a snorkel and watch turtles feeding at the corals...!!
After some days living in a hostel I found a room to rend last week. I stay in a house with my housemate Brett now and it's really great to have my own bedroom and bathroom. Furthermore Brett is building a swimmingpool which will be ready to jump in in about 4 weeks, very nice!
I'm living a bit outside Exmouth so I bought a bike which is quite a good one (much better than mine in Germany...)for 120$ from two other backpackers including helmet which is almost nothing! I think I can sell it for more afterwards so it was quite a good deal for me. My funny dress on that picture is not a new trend of mine but it's my uniform for the restaurant. To reduce my big 'diving-hole' in my purse I'm working in the Tavern (one of two bars in town) behind the bar/in the restaurant. It's fun and there is as well some nice benefit like free drinks, free overleft food... =)
And then of course the diving: It's really great here! I startet with my divemaster program a week ago and it's good fun, especially the practice for the rescuediver when your acting panicked diver and stuff like that! I've already seen 4 or 5 manta-rays what was really amazing! I didn't manage to grab a nice picture so far but I will post another one as soon as I get a good shot!!
The biggest attraction here at the moment are the whalesharks! It's definitely a breath-taking experience to see one of this huge fishes. It's the biggest fish on earth and this is the only spot in the world where you can see them nearly every day between april and july. The ones coming to the Ningaloo reef are between 4 and 12 meters long and it's a stunning view when you first see the head and then the body is coming and coming and it seems as if it doesn't end!!!
My plan is to stay here in Exmouth for a while so I will post more pictures when I get some more nice ones. It's not that easy to take good pictures underwater because it's very seldom that a whaleshark is in the mood to pose for you...

Challenge Apple Day

Hi again from Loriendale, the apple-orchard near Canberra. After my 3 weeks on the farm in January I came back 2 weeks ago to help for the Apple Day which took place last Saturday.
We worked quite a lot and I'm an expert now in picking apples and peeling and cutting an apple in 10 seconds... ! On Apple Day, Owen sold a lot of different varieties of apples, pears, jams and the famous apple pies (on the picture it's Lauren, one daughter with a fresh cooked apple pie). There was a bbq and coffee, muffins and scones as well and we made apple juice with an old press in the garage.
The two weeks were a little bit hard, we were busy 16h a day, but I earned a lot of money =)!

After Apple Day, we all went to the Canberra Stadium and watched the Rugby Game between The Brumbies (team from Canberra) against a team from South Africa. It was really fun, but I'm not sure if I got all the rules... .
Today is the last day in this part of Australia, I'll fly to Perth this evening. So perhaps I can already post some underwater pictures the next time!!

Hi everybody!
Back again in Australia. Martin picked me up from the airport in Sydney and we are travelling through the outback to Adelaide now. Two weeks are already over and a lot of things happend.
First of all we gave Martin's car a new outfit and got rid of the funny blue colour and the eyebrows at the frontlights.
After that we went west through the Blue Mountains to the Warrumbungle NP, an area with former vulcanic activity and beautiful landscape (see the first two pictures).
That's as well the place where we found the kangaroo with the joey in it's bag, very cute!
Afterwards we went on to White Cliffs, an opal town in the middle of nowhere. It's amazing, when you look around it's like standing on the moon. A lot of holes around (all the entrance-holes to the mines) and little hills out of white little rocks and dirt out of the mines. We got an private guided tour from Ron through his opal mine (picture 4, sorry I forgot to turn it). It's interesting, there lifestyle is completely different to what we know. He is digging since ~37 years and still motivated to find opals and he is indeed able to earn enough money for him and his family. The night in White Cliffs we stayed at the Underground Motel (it wasn't that expensive...), it's a 'dug-out'. All people living there have there homes digged in little hills, so they are living in underground houses. And theses dug-outs are really comfortable, they have ~22 degrees all time of the year and that's much better then the ~38 degrees we've had outside.
At the moment we're in Broken Hill, and nearby is a little 'ghosttown' called Silverton. More than 140 movies have been filmed here, for example "Mad Max" and the "Flying Doctor Service" series. It's a former silvermines town, but now there are only some artists living there. One is painting funny things, one is the emu-head, among others painted on the two VW-Beetle (last picture).
Now we are heading to Adelaide via Barossa Valley, where we'll taste some of the wines there.

Hi everybody!
My time in NZ is nearly over and it was a really great time! One month is definitely not enough and I'm sure I'll come back!! I've only seen the South-Island and not even the fiordland...
After my last blog-update I went on by bus for about another week. From Wanaka I was heading to the westcoast and had my first experience on an glacier. There are two glaciers which are going down to ~300m (!) above sealevel and both are growing very quickly (about half a meter a day). I went on the Franz Joseph galcier which is supposed to be the more beautiful (and therefore the more expensive one if you take a guided tour...) and it was really great! Amazing formations like holes, little caves and canyons out of white and blue ice.
Afterwards I went back to Christchurch to meet Jana and we drove to the north of the island to Paynes Ford near Golden Bay to go rock climbing. We camped on the 'Hangdog Climbers Campground' and it was a very familiar and nice atmosphere, a lot of friendly and funny people. The climbingrocks are just nearby the campground as well as the great swimmingholes from the river (third picture).
After this great weekend Jana had to go back to work and I started to discover New Zealand's mountains. Together with Jon, a canadien guy who I met on the Hangdog campground, I went for 6 days through the mountains of the Nelson Lakes National Park. It was amazing!! We've had so many breathtaking and stunning views, that I took over a 100 pictures during the tramp... it was really hard to decide which I should post.
We slept in huts and met a lot of interesting people. It was kind of a shock to come back to the civilisation, it's so quiet and peaceful to be in the mountains. (Pictures are in the next post.)
After this very, very nice tramp I went to Picton for 3 days and walked along the 'Queen-Charlotte-Sound'. It seems as if it's a big lake, but it's the ocean coming in the land and building a 'sound'. (Last picture in this post.)
Now I'm in Christchurch again at Jana's and Julian's place and I'll fly back to Australia on Sunday.

New Zealand

Hi everybody!
I'm in NZ since Monday, leaving Australia behind for about one month.
The last two weeks on the 'Loriendale' Farm (yes, the name comes from 'Lord Of The Rings' =)) were great and I'll return to Owen and Noreen for another two weeks in the beginning of April, to help with the big 'Apple Day'. I spend the weekend before I went to NZ at Petra and Doug's place and, among other things, I had to return 'my' little Honda =(. It was a great time travelling around with this car and thanks again to Petra and Doug!! I've had a lot of fun with it!!
But back to NZ now: Julian picked me up fron the airport and I've been two days in Christchurch at his place (thanks!=)). Christchurch is a nice city, but even though I left on Wednesday to go to Mt Cook Village. The weather was really bad the first two days and I've already taken a photo of a postcard of Mt Cook to show you... but yesterday was a sunny day and I grabbed some nice pictures.
Afterwards I went on to Wanaka, a little nice town an hour north of Queenstown. Today I went up to Mt Roy, but it's getting cloudy again and I hope, the weather won't be too bad the next couple of days. The landscape is quite nice and different to the area around Mt Cook (third photo).
I'm travelling by bus now, so I'm not that flexible anymore, but that doesn't really matter.

Farming down under

Hi, back again!
A lot of things happend since my last Blog-update. Micha, Katja and I went down to Jindabyne near the Snowy Mountains, but then then went further on to the south and I wanted to go on the highest mountain of Australia. It's the Mt Kosciuszko with ~2230m (big big mountain...) and it's quite crowded on the top, was not the best walk I did here but it was a funny feeling to be on the highest point of this continent (2 pictures)! The other picture with the dead trees gives an impression how it looks like after a big fire, which happens quite often during summertime.
But then I decided ( because it's called Work&Travel and not only Travel, thanks Alex for reminding me=)) to do something useful and now I'm working on a Farm near Canberra since one week and I will be there for about two more weeks, before I 'll fly to NZ in the beginning of February.
They have more than 2500 trees with apples and pears, some vegetables, chickens, sheep, one cow (it's more a pet and it doesn't do anything except feeding) and one horse. So I'm doing a lot of different things on the farm and it's interesting, especially moving the henshouses and therefore catching all the chickens and bringing them to their new home was very funny!! But mostly they sell the apples and the pears, all the other things (eggs, vegetables, ..) are for themselves or custumers coming to the farm to buy some things. One picture shows me with one of the pte-shppe and the other picture shows the clouds after a big thunderstorm on the farm. It was a great view!!
Perhaps I'll post some more pictures of the farm soon.

Funny animals and stuff

Hi!
Here I'm again. After we started successfully the year 2006 in Sydney we went southern along the coast (which was a very good decision because it's not that hot than in Sydney!) and grabbed some very funny pictures of some parrots and some wallabies (therefor you should have a look on Michas and Katjas blog, I put the link in my linklist on the right) in the Murramarang NP. (I'm sorry I'm not able to turn the picture of me and the parrots, it's this odd mac problem...)
And one evening we try to catch a crab (and in the end we were successful, what a great adventure=)) and cooked it afterwards. The arms with the claw (or whatever it's called) were really tasty but the body was 80% digestive tract, so that wasn't very tasty at all...Next time we'll try to catch prawns, I hope they'll be more tasteful than this crab.
The Beach was a really nice spot at Jervis Bay where we went snorkeling and we saw sting rays, a lot of fishes, one nice jellyfish and Micha and Katja saw even saw two blowfishes!!
Now we're in Canberra celebrating Petra's birthday, having a shower, ... and tomorrow I'll head to the Snowy Mountains.

Happy new year to everbody!! I hope you've got a great Party and a graet start to 2006!!
After I've left the Grampians NP I went to Batenams Bay to spend Christmas together with Petra, Doug, his father Harold and his twinbrother Eric and Betty. On the picture you can see Petra, Doug, Harold, me and our lovely Christmast-Tree on the Beach =)!
But there is no comparison to christmas in Germany!!! It's completely different.
Afterthat, I met Micha and Katja in the Blue Mountains and to New Year we saw teh amazing firewokrs of Sydney Harbour!! We've got a nice spot in one of the suburbs of Sydney, were we've got a nice view on the Harbour Bridge and the Skyline of Sydney. One of the pictures shows the view we've got at our nice little Beach. And there was a guy on a boat coming around (other picture) selling coffee, ice cream and softdrinks. Very clever, I think he made good money this day.The other two pictures are taken in the Blue Mountains. But it's sticky hot at the moment (35 Grad), so I'm glad to leave this place and go a bit more southern, perhaps to the Snowy Mountains

Hi!
A few more pictures of the Grampians region. It's typical in the country to have all the mailboxes at the crossing with the mainroad and sometimes the mailboxes are extremly creative. Appearing as a pig or other figures.
The Wallaby was feeding beside my car on the campground. It's quite funny to have your breakfast while the wallaby is sitting beside you having breakfast, too!
I'm in Melbourne now, first time since Sydney in an Backpackerhostel, and it's a nice City. Huge, but not as busy and stressful as Sydney.
Don't know, wether I do another post before chrismas, so I want to wish you all a happy chrismas!!

Hi guys!
After five days in Adelaide, where I waited for my rim getting fixed, I'm now in the Grampians NP. I've had a flat tyre on Kangaroo Island and the rim was broken, too, so first I had to get the tyre repaired (it was more complicated than I thought...) and after that I could get new tyres.
But now I'm in the Grampians NP and it's great!!! The Grampians are mountains between Adelaide and Melbourne and you can do a lot of walking and hiking in this area. It's possible to go rock-climbing as well but till now I didn't find any climbers and I don't want to pay for a tour. But it's allright, I do a lot of hiking and it's really beautiful!! It's not what we would call 'mountains'=), but I like this place! You can see a lot of waterfalls as well and you've got many scenic views around here.
For all the Germans: Ich hoffe ihr habt eine schneereiche Adventszeit und baut ordentlich Schneemaenner!!!

Hi again!
After nearly 7 days now without internet I'm back in the civilized world now. I've been on Kangaroo Island and that's really a wonderfull place!!! There is so much you can see on this Island and the landscape is beautifull!!
At Seal Bay you ncan sea a big Seallion colony sleeping and resting on the beach. Guided by rangers you are allowed to walk on the beach and have a look nearby the seals. 10km beside this beach there is a region you can find a lot of limestone-caves (no picture, I'm sorry), and till now only half of all the caves are known. The Flinders Chase NP is in the western area of the Island and there are a lot of beautifull walks along the river. You can see the "Remarkable Rocks" there as well (it's me, this little red thing on the picture) and a big arch (no picture).
And, of caurse, a lot of animals like kangaroos, koalas, potoroos (I'm not sure about the right spelling, it's on one of the pictures) funny little birds, wallebys, ....
Very, very nice island.
I,m in Adelaide now for the next three days and after that I'll go to the "Grampians NP", looking forward to grab more pictures for the blog =)!

Hey guys!!
A few people are't able to read my blog because it's in german so at least Petra convinced my to write it in english. I'm sorry about all my mistakes but I'm sure you'll get what I want to tell you.
I'm in Mt Gambier now and it's a very nice town. There is a lot of volcano activity in this region and Mt Gambier has a big crater filled with water. It's called the "Blue Lake" because it's really blue (picture)!! And it changes it's colour every year because of particles of calcium carbonate in the water. It's all limestone arround this area and in winter, the water ist a bit colder and calcium carbonate goes in suspension. That's why lhe lake appears grey during the winter. In spring, the water is getting warmer, calcium carbonate goes in solution and the lake is getting blue! Really interesting!!
Aside from the lake and the beautiful area around the lake there are a lot of funny animals to see here. There are a lot of caves arround here and in one 'sinkhole' (a cave, were the roof has broken down) possums come out at night and you can feed them, they are not shy!
Furthermore threre ist a very nice wildlife park here (entry free!!) were I saw a lot of kangoroos (picture), wallebys, emus (I took that funny picture while it was running about 2 metres in front of me!!) and a lot of birds!! Very cool!!
At Mama and Papa: as you perhaps have read in the comments of the last post, I saw a lot of echidnas and I have pictures of them, but they are allready on my iPod and I can't compress them at this PC. When I'm able to I'll show one on the blog!

Hab' nach langer Zeit mal wieder 'nen Netzzugang! Ist viel passiert in der letzten Woche!!! Als erstes mal ein Foto mit mir und meinem wirklichen Reise-Campingauto! Ist sehr bequem, aber ich duerfte keine 5 cm groesser sein und bei Regen ist die Bewegungsfreiheit doch recht eingeschraenkt.Tolles Ding, bin aber heute nach 7 Campingtagen mal wieder im Hostel, regnet naemlich...
Zwei Fotos sind Rainforestbilder aus dem Lorne State Park bzw. Otway NP. War 'ne sehr schoene Gegend!!! Bin anschliessend die Kueste entlang bis zum Port Campbell NP mit u.a. den beruehmten Aposteln (zweites Bild, einer weniger..). Fand aber das Kuestenstueck um "Loch Ard Gorge" noch etwas schoener, war auch nicht so mit Japanern bevoelkert. Ist extrem geile Gegend und an dem Tag war das Wetter auch echt spitze!! Der Otway NP, an dem ich die Tage vorher war, ist auch sehr schoen und es gab viele wildlebende Koalas und Wallebys zu sehen!! War dort aber echt schlimm mit Moskitos und Fliegen. Ich hab' glaube ich noch kein Wort ueber australische Fliegen verloren: es gint wahrscheinlich nix nervenderes als diese Viecher. Sie sind staendig in deinen Ohren, im Gesicht und zu tausenden auf deinem Pulli und dem Rucksack!!! Aber ansonsten geht's mir gut...=).

Hi alle zusammen!
Mal wieder ein kleines Update. Nachdem ich fuer etwas mehr als eine Woche in Canberra war, bin ich kurz bei Verwandten von Douglas in Albury gewesen und hab die letzten 2 Tage auf Phillip Island, suedlich von Melbourne, verbracht. Zwar etwas touristisch und damit teuer, aber sehr geil! Hab Koalas gesehen und bin mit drei anderen Leuten viel auf der Insel rumgewandert. Ausserdem lebt auf der Insel eine Kolonie der kleinsten Pinguine der Welt und jeden abend kommen sie an Land und watscheln zu ihren Nestern. Dieses abendliche Spektakel ist echt super, man darf nur wegen der Blitzlichter keine Fotos schiessen... . Ich hab ein paar mal verscuht, ohne Blitz zu fotografieren, aber die Bilder sind sehr dunkel und man erkennt nicht viel. Ausserdem haben sie nach einiger Zeit meine Kamera eingetuetet, das war's dann fuer den Abend mit der Fotografiererei...=)
Bin jetzt in Geelong und werde mich morgen auf die Great Ocean Road begeben!
Ach ja, alle diejenigen, die wirklich dachten, dass ich mit dem Auto von der Autoralley unterwegs war, muss ich leider enttaeuschen. Ich werd noch mal ein Foto von meinem "Camping-Car" machen!

Impressionen der australischen Kultur =)

Bin heute den letzten Tag in Canberra und werd' morgen gen Sueden aufbrechen. Hab' in der letzten Woche ein paar australische 'Events' kennengelernt, sehr cool... Dienstag war ich mit Petra beim Melbourne-Cup, ist ein Pferderennen, dass ca. 5 Minuten dauert und es wird ein Trubel gemacht als wenn die Queen kommt um jedem persönlich die Hand zu schütteln. Ist so eine Art Modenschau fuer alle, hab leider kein gescheites Foto aber jeder ist 'dressed up' bis es nicht weiter geht und jeder Australier (ohne Ausnahme!!) wettet auf ein Pferd. Welches Pferd in welcher Form ist wird natuerlich schon Wochen vorher diskutiert...). Sehr lustig anzuschauen =), besonders wenn jeder mit Pfennigabsaetzen und Sonnenschirmchen auf dem Rasen rumwackelt...
Heute waren wir bei 'ner Auto Ralley across the country, wo Freunde von Petra und Doug mitgemacht haben, sehr cool, besonders weil ich dort mein Auto fuer die naechsten drei Monate gefunden hab' =) (siehe Foto). Die anderen Fotos sind a)Petra und Doug, b) ein Grasbaum und c) ein lustiges Vieh, wobei ich den Namen nicht weiss...
So far, Weiteres spaeter.
Und sorry, werde die Fotos das naechste mal besser anordnen, kann das leider nicht mehr aendern.

Nach zwei Tagen in Sydney bin ich nun seit Freitag in Canberra bei Petra und Doug. Die Tourist-Sites von Sydney sind ganz nett und von der Harbour Bridge oder vom botanischen Garten aus (Foto) hat man einen ganz schoenen Blick auch die Oper. Hab auch kurz ueberlegt, auf die Harbuor Bridge zu klettern, aber bei einem Trinkgeld von 165$ fuer die Guides hab ich dann doch den normalen Weg ueber die Bruecke genommen. Ansonsten ist Sydney krass: extrem viele Leute und Reizueberflutung pur!
Bin jetzt noch 'ne Woche in Canberra (an dieser Stelle: viele Dank fuer Speis' und Trank und alles=)) und werde dann loslegen in Richtung Melbourne und Great Ocean Road!! Dann gibt's mehr Fotos!!!

Nun ist es endlich soweit: Bin in Sydney angekommen!!! Etwas gejetlackt zwar, aber das wird sich ja bald geben. Wetter ist sehr geil, heute morgen um 6 Uhr(!!!) waren es schon 20 Grad, als wir aus dem Flieger gestiegen sind!!

Hallo liebe Leute!
Noch bin ich in Jena. Am 24. Oktober geht's dann endlich los, im Flieger für 10 Monate nach "down under"!
Werde mich dann (hoffentlich) regelmäßig durch diese Seite bei euch melden um euch auf dem Laufenden zu halten.
